How to use OpenVPN in your Seedbox on PC (Windows and Mac)

A seedbox is an efficient way to download and upload torrent files and can offer you the privacy and security that you need while doing so. However, if you want more security while downloading the files on your local desktop or when using your seedbox for other purposes, you can use a VPN connection.

Thankfully, a few seedbox providers offer a seedbox with a VPN connection and OpenVPN is the most popularly used software.

In this post, we will be covering information on how you can connect your OpenVPN service to your seedbox. This will allow you to hide your local IP address and improve privacy when you are browsing the Web.

What is an OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is basically an open-source software that applies virtual private network mode on a connection between two servers to form a secure site-to-site or a point-to-point connection between a routed configuration and a remote access system. It has a custom security protocol that uses an SSL/TLS for secure key exchange.

With this VPN software, you will be able to connect with your peers securely after authentication in the form of passwords, certificates, or pre-shared secret keys.

How to Configure OpenVPN on Windows

Now, before you begin with the configuration of OpenVPN on your computer, make sure that your service provider provides you the feature of using your seedbox with a VPN software. A few seedbox providers don’t offer this feature so, it is important that your check beforehand.

To configure and use OpenVPN for your seedbox file transfers from your Windows platform, follow the below-mentioned steps for the implementation of the same.

Step 1: Download OpenVPN on your Windows PC

The first thing that you need to do is download OpenVPN client for your Windows platform. For this, you need to go to the official website of OpenVPN at https://openvpn.net/ to download the installation file. On this website, click on the ‘Community’ menu tab and select Downloads option and you will be taken to the download page.

Here, you need to select the installation file for your Windows platform and then click on the corresponding OpenVPN install button to begin the download. Wait for the download to get completed and then run the installation exe file to install the OpenVPN client on your computer. Follow the instructions as shown on the PC and complete the installation.

OpenVPN client is now successfully installed and ready to use.

Step 2: Configure your OpenVPN client

First, you need to log in to your seedbox account and go to the Control Panel area. Here, you need to click on ‘Settings’ and then select the ‘On’ option for the TUN/TAP settings. Next, click on the ‘Yes’ button to confirm the change.

Now, head to the Client Area –> Credentials page to download the .ovpn file. Once you have downloaded the file, move this configuration file to the ‘config’ folder in the OpenVPN client folder. Also, note down your OpenVPN credentials (username and password) as you would need to enter these in order to connect to your seedbox securely.

After you do this, proceed to the next step to connect to your seedbox.

Step 3: Connect your Seedbox with OpenVPN client

Launch your OpenVPN client and click on the ‘Connect’ button to start the VPN connection sequence. You will be prompted to enter your OpenVPN credentials, enter your username and password that you noted down from your Seedbox Credentials page and then click on the ‘Ok’ button.

Now, OpenVPN client will start the connection sequence and once it is complete, you will be connected to Seedbox via an anonymous connection. When this happens, you will see the ‘Connected’ status on your client and the icon will be green in color.

Congratulations! You are now browsing using a secure VPN connection. Anyone on the Internet who follows your trail will only see the Seedbox or VPN’s IP and your complete Internet traffic will go through the Seedbox VPN service.

Alternatively, you can use a seedbox hosting server to download and manage your torrent file downloads.

How to Configure OpenVPN on OS X

For Mac OS, you can get the Tunnelblick open-software Open VPN client and configure it to connect to your seedbox. Follow the below steps to get started on this:

Step 1: Download Tunnelblick Client on your Mac PC

To download the installation file for Tunnelblick OpenVPN client, go to the official website at https://tunnelblick.net/ and then click on the ‘Download Latest Stable Release’ to begin the download. Wait for the download to get completed.

Once the download is complete, open the folder containing the Tunnelblick file and double-click on the dmg file to open it. Next, open the Applications folder in a new window and then move the installation file here to start the installation process. Follow the installation instructions and once the installation is complete, eject the dmg file and delete it.

Step 2: Configure your Tunnelblick OpenVPN client

Now, you log in to your seedbox account and go to the Control Panel area. Click on the ‘Settings’ option next and then select the ‘On’ option for the TUN/TAP settings to enable the settings. Finally, click on the ‘Yes’ button to confirm.

Go to the Client Area –> Credentials page to download the .ovpn file. Also, note down your OpenVPN credentials (username and password) as you would need to enter these in order to connect to your seedbox securely.

After you do this, proceed to the next step to connect to your seedbox.

Step 3: Connect your Seedbox with Tunnelblick OpenVPN client

To connect to the seedbox, right click on the .ovpn configuration file and choose the ‘Open With’ option as ‘Tunnelblick’.

On the Tunnelblick, click on the Settings option and then click on the ‘Connect seedbox’ option. After this, you will be prompted to enter your seedbox OpenVPN credentials and submit it. Once you do that, this OpenVPN client will start a connection sequence and will get connected to your OpenVPN via a seedbox. You can verify the connection by ensuring the status is showing as ‘Connected’.

All your Internet traffic will use Seedbox VPN service and anyone who tries to find your IP will see the IP showing as your seedbox or VPN’s IP.
